Economic Development & Business Impacts
Job Creation
Fuel revenue indexing (FRI) is projected to create more than 9,000 local jobs over the next decade. An additional 25,000 jobs would be created during construction periods. Since the program's inception, more than 70 local small businesses have benefited from improved transportation infrastructure funding.
Economic Impact
Every $1 of local investment in transportation infrastructure leverages approximately $4 in federal funding. Washoe County implemented a similar fuel tax indexing measure in 2009 and has successfully funded critical road improvements while maintaining accountability and transparency. A vibrant economy depends on efficient, reliable transportation systems.
Road Safety
Nevada ranks 3rd in the nation for pedestrian fatalities. Roadway deficiencies contribute to approximately one-third of fatal traffic accidents. Poor road conditions cost the average motorist $193 per year in additional vehicle repairs.
Congestion Relief
Southern Nevada drivers waste an average of 46 hours annually sitting in traffic congestion. This congestion wastes approximately 21 gallons of fuel per driver each year. The combined cost of wasted time and fuel amounts to $960 annually per driver. Hidden costs of congestion include decreased productivity and reduced quality of life, estimated at $365 per driver per year.
Accountability
100% of fuel tax indexing proceeds are dedicated exclusively to Clark County roads and transportation infrastructure - no diversion to other programs. All funded projects are publicly listed on the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) and Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) websites. Annual independent audits ensure proper use of funds and full transparency.
